👌🏼 Changing Your Life By Going Micro

Productivity

Happy Sunday friends! 🦃

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving with friends and family 🩵 and found some killer deals for Black Friday 😈.

Around the holidays many people (me included) take time to reflect on things like relationships, goals, and habits 💭.

I recently read the book Tiny Tweaks, Huge Gains by Tamsin Haleshenk as I was thinking about all this 👓. While I decided not to include this title in my book notes 📗, I thought it would make for a great newsletter because of the main topic of the book:

Micro-habits.

Micro-habits are exactly what they sound like: Tiny habits and actions that can be integrated into our daily routine 🔁.

While micro-habits sound small, they can actually have big, lasting impressions on our lives 😯. The beautiful thing about micro-habits is that the barrier to entry is so low 👍🏻. A micro-habit doesn't ask that you entirely upend your day or how you normally operate, but rather it's a small tweak or addition for the better. Here are some examples of micro-habits that can have long lasting effects:

  • Make your bed as soon as you wake up in the morning 🛌
  • Every time you see your water bottle, take a sip 🚰
  • Take 1 minute to be mindful of the moment you are in or your surroundings ⏸️
  • Every time you stand up from your desk, do 1 stretch 🙆🏾‍♀️
  • Spend 30 seconds visualizing yourself accomplishing a task or goal 👁️

Don't believe these small changes can amount to much? Just as one example, if you were to take a sip every time you walked by your water bottle, that could increase your daily water intake by 10-20 oz 📈. Think about how hydrated you could be 💦!

Micro-habits become even easier to stick with and more powerful by practicing habit stacking and linking them to tasks you already do on a daily basis 🔗. For example, one micro-habit that I've integrated my life is every evening when I'm brushing my teeth 🪥, I think about one thing I was grateful for that day ☮️. I've been doing this for so long that it not only gives me a little mental boost before bed, but now I feel like I can't brush my teeth without it! This is the power of micro-habits ⚡️.

So during this holiday season 🎄, find one micro-habit you can add to your life and give it a try. You might just find that it's easier to make a change than you thought! 😌
