Happy Sunday friends! ☘️
CONGRATULATIONS to all the amazing future physicians who had a successful Match Day 2026 🥳. This was the largest Match Day ever, so I hope it was filled with tons of joy and celebration 🎉.
Matching into residency is a massive accomplishment and something to be proud of 👏. Now that it's been over a week since Match Day however, a lot of you are probably realizing something:
The confetti is on the floor and months of questions finally have answers. You have a future residency program, maybe a new city...and it's real 🤯.
Whenever a big life event like Match Day happens, I think it's always beneficial to take some time to reflect 💭.
So what did you learn ❓
Were you happy simply knowing that you matched 😸, regardless of the destination? Were you slightly disappointed 😞, or surprised by the emotions you felt? Did you take time to celebrate you, or were you still comparing yourself to others 👀?
In addition to being a big celebration, Match Day is also a deep insight into what you think is important vs what's actually important ⚖️. For example, when it came to my own Match Day experience 🙋🏽♂️, the reality that hit when I opened that envelope was very different from what I was expecting...and I learned a lot about myself in the months that followed 💚.
That experience taught me something I've carried ever since: our emotional response to a result often reveals more about us than the result itself 💡.
The full spectrum of emotions in medicine won't stop at Match Day though🩺. Sometimes the smallest win, like getting a compliment from a colleague or being able to try a new procedure, makes our whole day 😃. And other times frustration is waiting just around the corner, maybe from a rude consultant or a patient that has a bad outcome despite our best efforts 😞.
It's important to realize that while none of these moments define us, our response to them absolutely does ⭐.
No matter where you are in your journey, whether you're just starting medical school 📚, matched and on the way to residency 🔒, or a seasoned physician 🏥, pay attention to your reactions during times of change and turmoil. Self-awareness like that is an important skill to a long and happy career in medicine.
Start cultivating that skill today 🌱.
