June is a crazy time of year 🤪. Not only is it the halfway point of 2025 and the perfect time for a quarterly check-in 🧐, but it's also the time when students are graduating from medical school and jumping right into residency 🏃♀️.
A lot of new interns have asked what advice I’d give as they start residency 💭. There are tons of possible answers, but here’s what I keep coming back to:
It's all about balance.
Medicine is a marathon, not a sprint 🛣️. Between the chaotic schedule, tough cases, and commitment to caring for others no matter the circumstances, it's easy to feel drained 🪫. While this is most prominent in the thick of residency 🥼, it also applies whether you're just starting medical school 🩺, or already practicing 💉.
Maintaining balance through each of these phases is critical to guarantee you have a long-lasting and fulfilling career ⚖️.
So what might this look like in real life 🤔? Here are a few ideas:
- Getting ice cream after a tough exam 🍦
- Planning a weekend staycation to celebrate finishing USMLE or COMLEX 🏖️
- Setting up a weekly Zoom hangout with family 👨🏿💻
- Making time for a weekly dinner with friends or co-residents 🍽️
Remember, quality time doesn't need to be fancy or expensive–it just needs to be personal and meaningful to you 🩷.
Healthcare workers want to do a good job, and it can be easy to justify sacrificing eating 🍔, sleeping 🛌, or socializing 👯♀️ to be successful. But these strategies can actually be counterproductive, causing more serious issues like burnout and fatigue 📉.
Instead, I encourage everyone to find what works for them, develop healthy habits, and be consistent 😌.

🙂 Items for Wellness: Staying balanced isn’t always easy, but a few of my favorite wellness picks from the Med School Moose Amazon Shop make it a little bit easier.
💜 Something I love: Pentel Energel Pens have been a favorite of mine in the hospital for the past few months. While they don't beat the Sharpie S-Gel Pens (AKA best pen ever), they're a worthy alternative.
🗺️ Something I discovered: Tweek is a super helpful (and free) app available on iOS and Android that has been helping me maintain a simple, organized to-do list while on the go.
