โ€ฆand more!

This newsletter is going out at the end of August, but in just a few days on September 3rd, students will be able to start submitting their residency applications through ERAS and ResidencyCAS! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I've written many different articles on the application process โœ๐Ÿพ, all of which can be found on the medical students page ๐Ÿ”.

This month I want to share some tips to ensure everyone is set up for success for the upcoming residency interview season, so let's get to it already...! โฌ‡๏ธ

  • Submit your application as soon as possible ๐Ÿ“จ. The early bird gets the worm ๐Ÿชฑ, and residency applications are no exception ๐Ÿฅ. Make sure your application is complete, polished, and ready to go as soon as you can send it in (September 3rd, remember?!). Even if there are still items pending such as a USMLE score report or a letter of recommendation, these can always be sent in and added on later.
  • Pick meaningful experiences and hobbies ๐Ÿˆ. I discussed this in detail in my tips for filling out ERAS article last year. Experiences and hobbies are not only a bulky part of residency applications, but they're some of the few areas that can truly make you stand out ๐ŸŒŸ! Include experiences that had an impact on you and that you can reliably discuss during an interview. Don't be afraid to share your hobbies as well...I have both asked and been asked about hobbies during residency interviews! ๐Ÿคจ

  • Start preparing your elevator speech ๐Ÿ›—. If you've never heard of an elevator speech, you need to read this. This elevator speech discussion is one of the most popular articles on my website, and for good reason if your goal is to put your best foot forward on interview day! ๐Ÿพ
  • Do some online housekeeping ๐Ÿงน. Tons of residency programs are using social media nowadays, and that social media account is usually run by someone who could very easily look you up ๐Ÿ•ต๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ. Consider making your social media accounts private, or at the very least clean up any content that might be inappropriate or controversial ๐Ÿ˜ถ.
  • Set your email up for success ๐Ÿ“ซ. Once you submit your application, it's going to be a waiting game for interview invites and you don't want to miss anything. Set email up on your phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ, turn on notifications ๐Ÿ””, turn off your focused inbox ๐Ÿ“ฅ, and frequently check your spam folder ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ. If you're someone who has a hard time staying on top of emails, you may even want to consider creating an entirely separate, dedicated email address to keep things organized ๐Ÿ’ผ.

And that's it!

While there will be much more advice to share in future newsletters ๐Ÿ”ฎ, these tips ensure that your residency interview season will start off in tip top shape ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ. As always, feel reach out @MedSchoolMoose on TikTok or Instagram with any questions! ๐Ÿ˜„
